In 1988, Channel Islands High School made history as the first high school to enter a drill team featuring men into competition at the famous Miss Drill Team USA competition in Santa Monica California. The team qualified to compete in the Novelty division and took 2nd overall in the category, setting the stage for other schools to begin incorporating males into their drill teams and eventually the evolution of the 'All Male' divisions.
Channel Islands High School has many Squads: Short Flags, All Male, All Female, Banners, Islander Drill, Drumline, Coed Dance, JV & Varsity Cheer. These squads all participate in various competitions locally, nationally, even internationally, earning recognition and taking top honors at competitions such as USA Nationals and Miss Dance/Drill Team USA. Channel Islands' very own Short Flags has celebrated an unprecedented 15-year first place winning streak at Drill Team USA from 1980–1995, as well as having the honor of being the very first school to 3-Peat at USA Nationals (2001–03). Coed Dance & Islander Drill have also taken home nationals titles from USA Nationals & Miss Dance/Drill Team U.S.A.
In its first year, Channel Islands All Male 1995-96 were undefeated champions (13-0), taking home first place trophies from the prestigious Drill Team USA and USA Nationals competitions. Ever since, Channel Islands has been a top contender and an innovator in the All Male Division. Ten years after its inception, the All Male team of 2004-05 also earned the honor of undefeated champions.
Drumline also received the Golden drumhead at DAC competition in 2004-05.
The All Female Dance team has also recently won the Miss Dance Drill Team USA competition led by Captain; consequently winning the highest awarded points in the medium division. Currently making them Undefeated champions of 2008-09 after only 4 years of existence.
